When teaching children, we tend to keep things simple.
Telling a 2yo that his truck is in reality every color but red, and that it's reflecting the red light back to his eyes is a bit much.
We also tend to teach with the pigment terms and not the light terms.

"Basic colors" would be simple colors that we generally teach children. We also teach them to adults when learning a new language.
Or the purist form/best representation of a primary, secondary, or tertiary color.

Tints and shades come later.

Your comment about it being a cultural thing is spot on.
I've read tons of "my first colors" books over the past 5 years, and grey and pink are the only tints/shades that are ever brought up.

It just stuck out to me the other day that it was unique. Which it is.

What is a "basic color"? All color is just different wavelengths of light. There are no "basic colors" in reality, only colors.

In pigment science there are "primary colors" which can be combined to create other color pigments, but that's only relevant when you're using pigments, it doesn't work for light (the pigments are created to reflect/absorb certain colors of light). The true building block of color is white light, as white light contains all the colors we can detect.

Black is actually the absence of light, not the presence of all color; while white is the presence of all colors. You can prove this with a prism and a ray of white light (sunlight works best or white LEDs). The white light will breakup into a complete spectrum, which includes every shade of pink.

Pink isn't simply light red, it's a specific shade and hue of light. There also isn't "light red", "light yellow" and "light blue". These are generic terms that simply describe the color, but aren't their true names. Wikipedia has a good list of names if you want to teach the names of colors (wish I had this as a kid): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors

As for why Pink is a common color taught to children.... it's a cultural thing (IMO). Pink is the color we have chosen for love and girls. It's a common color, so we know it's name and we share this. If Cobolt or Stizza was the color of happiness, then we'd all be familiar with them.

Have you ever dissected your Vonage bill to see how much you're effectively paying per minute of talk time (local AND long distance)? Unlimited calling isn't very pretty for the vast majority of low- to mid-range users. It's like paying for a buffet and eating a salad.

Cell phone bills usually aren't any better, but we live with it for the luxury of mobility. I cut my iPhone plan from 1350 to 450 minutes per month by breaking bad habits like calling people from my cell when I was at home and taking better advantage of nights/weekends. That was an easy $40/month savings on those 900 minutes, or 4.4 cents per minute I was paying to get my "free" long distance. And don't get me started on AT&T's silly overage rates...

As for 800 numbers - say a company with 25,000 customers uses 50,000 toll free minutes a month at 4 cents per minute... if they're passing that cost on to you through upping their cost on services, it's 8 cents per month. I guess that can really add up if you do business with hundreds of companies?

This isn't a new concept. Disney made Spears (and probably many other teen idols) and now they are making Miley. All the mouse cares about is money. And nothing sells albums better than a half naked under-aged girl (especially to horny teen boys who have some kind of small disposable income).

The Japanese have been working this angle for decades. Their idols can come and go overnight, but they all meet the basic requirement: Are they sexy to either men or women (or both)? If Yes, strip off half their clothes, put them on TV and their albums will move (no matter if the music is good or not).

Any parent who complains is a hypocrite. When they were teens they were lusting after some kind of idol (unless they were in some kind of fundamentalist religious family, but they probably don't watch the Teen Awards) and now they have to protect their little ones against all these "bad" visuals that they wished they had when they were that age.

At least that's my take on the whole situation.
